Psg targets diogo costa: a 60m€ move before the world cup?

Despite Matvey Safonov’s strong performances for Paris Saint-Germain since stepping into the starting role, his position as the club’s number one goalkeeper for the upcoming season is far from secure. PSG’s sporting advisor, Luis Campos, is reportedly working to finalize a significant transfer for FC Porto’s acclaimed shot-stopper, Diogo Costa.

Following their Ligue 1 title triumph, secured with a victory over RC Lens, Luis Campos stated that transfer discussions had been put on hold. He explicitly mentioned, “For us, regarding the transfer market, and this is a decision we made with our coach and the president, our transfer activity has been completely paused for several weeks.” This strategic pause was clearly aimed at prioritizing the upcoming Champions League final on May 30 against Arsenal. However, this temporary halt doesn’t mean the Parisian club lacks clear objectives for the summer transfer window.

PSG’s pursuit of Diogo Costa?

Recent reports indicate that PSG is keen on acquiring Diogo Costa, the goalkeeper for the newly crowned Portuguese champions, FC Porto. This potential move suggests that the Parisian giants might not intend to fully commit to Matvey Safonov, despite his flawless performances since becoming the first-choice keeper, nor to reintegrate Lucas Chevalier, who joined for 40M€ plus bonuses last summer. Diogo Costa extended his contract until 2030 last December, notably with a revised, lower release clause. This clause is now set at 60M€.

Could a transfer be finalized before the World Cup?

This contract adjustment could signal an imminent departure for Costa. Further details suggest that PSG has intensified negotiations regarding Diogo Costa, aiming to complete his transfer before the World Cup commences on June 11. The club’s objective appears to be resolving the crucial goalkeeper situation as swiftly as possible. It’s also worth noting that Diogo Costa‘s agent is Jorge Mendes, a figure well-acquainted with Luis Campos. This existing relationship could significantly streamline discussions for a transfer involving the goalkeeper, who is expected to be Portugal’s starting custodian this summer.
