The Senegalese government will not cover travel expenses for supporters heading to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, announced Sports Minister Khady Diène Gaye. Fans must now rely on personal resources or local initiatives to cheer on the Lions during the tournament.
Speaking on national radio, Minister Gaye outlined the decision, citing sovereignty and logistical constraints as key factors. “Each nation governs its own approach. For this edition, we cannot finance supporter travel,” she stated, adding that visa rejections for official fan representatives further complicated plans.
no official fan mobilization for 2026
“We will not organize any group travel from Dakar to the United States,” confirmed the minister. This move dismisses widespread speculation about potential state-backed fan mobilizations for the historic tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The decision shifts responsibility to the diaspora and financially capable supporters, who will need to arrange their own accommodations, flights, and match tickets. While this may limit numbers, it aligns Senegal’s approach with several other African nations facing similar budgetary challenges.
