Senegal political shake-up as prime minister ousmane sonko dismissed

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko dismissed in Senegal

The political landscape in Senegal is set to remain turbulent following the dismissal of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko by the Head of State. The decision came just hours after a heated exchange between the outgoing premier and lawmakers in the National Assembly. This move underscores the deepening rifts within the ruling coalition and the challenges facing the administration.

Tensions escalate in the National Assembly

During a parliamentary session, Ousmane Sonko openly criticized the existence of political funds, reigniting long-simmering tensions. Recent weeks have seen a sharp deterioration in relations between the executive and legislative branches. Just three weeks prior, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye had sought to quell rumors of an institutional crisis in a televised address to the nation. “He is my Prime Minister. As long as he remains in office, it is because he has my full confidence. The moment that changes, he will be replaced,” the President had stated, projecting an image of composure.

However, Sonko swiftly countered with a direct message to his supporters. Addressing the crowd, the Pastef leader called for renewed commitment, emphasizing that the party’s ideology transcends personal ambition. In his view, the movement is built on sacrifice, selflessness, and service to the nation.

Government reshuffle signals shifting alliances

Two days after this political standoff, the President took decisive action by appointing Me Abdoulaye Tine as the new Spokesperson for the Presidency. A key figure in the Diomaye Président coalition, he succeeded Ousseynou Ly, a close ally of Sonko. The outgoing spokesman publicly reaffirmed his loyalty to the Pastef project, stating:

“My dedication and loyalty to the transformation agenda led by Pastef, under the leadership of President Ousmane Sonko, remain unwavering. This project, which embodies the hope and ambition for a sovereign, just, and prosperous Senegal, continues to guide our every action.”

The disagreement centers on the future of the Diomaye Président coalition. While Sonko advocates for its dissolution, President Faye insists on preserving the alliance, which played a pivotal role in securing victory in the 2024 presidential election.

Economic strains add pressure to the crisis

These political tensions unfold against a backdrop of economic strain. Senegal is grappling with sluggish economic activity and a public debt nearing 132% of GDP. The country’s sovereign credit rating has been downgraded repeatedly, reflecting growing difficulties in accessing international markets and the pending negotiations for a new agreement with the International Monetary Fund.

The dismissal marks the end of a decade-long political partnership. Ousmane Sonko, barred from contesting the 2024 presidential election, had endorsed Bassirou Diomaye Faye as the Pastef candidate. Faye went on to win the presidency in the first round with over 54% of the vote, defeating former Prime Minister Amadou Ba.
