After stepping down from office two and a half years ago and relocating to Morocco, former Senegalese President Macky Sall is set to meet with the country’s current leader, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, on July 17. This meeting marks a significant step in Sall’s campaign to secure the position of United Nations Secretary-General.
Diplomatic discussions centered on international leadership
In a statement shared on social media, Macky Sall confirmed his travel plans to Dakar, where he will hold discussions with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. The encounter is part of Sall’s ongoing consultations as he seeks support for his candidacy to lead the UN. “As part of my consultations ahead of my bid for the UN Secretary-General position, I will visit Senegal on Friday, July 17, 2026,” Sall wrote. He expressed his appreciation for the invitation and gratitude to the Senegalese people for their continued support.
Political tensions rise over former leader’s visit
The upcoming meeting has stirred reactions within Senegal’s political landscape, particularly among hardline supporters of the PASTEF party led by Ousmane Sonko. Critics argue that welcoming Macky Sall could be interpreted as endorsing past electoral violence and alleged mismanagement of the country’s economic and financial resources. The debate reflects deep divisions over how Sall’s legacy is perceived in the nation.
It is worth noting that Macky Sall‘s candidacy for the UN position has not been officially sponsored by Senegal. Instead, it is backed by Burundi. Sall served as Senegal’s President from 2012 to 2024, and since leaving office, he has been actively engaging with global leaders to bolster his campaign for the UN’s top administrative role.
