Senegal prime minister unveils bold job creation plan for youth

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has reiterated the government’s commitment to prioritizing employment as the cornerstone of its economic and social agenda during a parliamentary session on May 22, 2026. Addressing lawmakers during a lively exchange of questions, the head of government made a resolute pledge to tackle youth unemployment—a pressing issue fueled by mounting public expectations.
« Employment is our absolute priority, and we will create thousands of jobs. I give you my word as Prime Minister, » Sonko declared before the assembled parliamentarians. The Prime Minister outlined how this initiative aligns with a broader strategy to redefine Senegal’s economic priorities, emphasizing the development of the domestic private sector and strengthening national economic sovereignty.
While underscoring his determination, Sonko acknowledged the need for economic realism. « I cannot promise every citizen a job, but we will create thousands of opportunities for young people, » he clarified. He stressed that this ambitious plan would require coordinated efforts from the state, private enterprises, and economic partners.
In his address, Sonko also advocated for an economic policy centered on national interests. The goal, he explained, is to ensure greater participation of Senegalese citizens in productive sectors without undermining cooperation with foreign investors. « We are prioritizing national interests, which does not mean we will turn our backs on foreigners. Our approach ensures a substantial role for Senegalese in key sectors, » he stated firmly.
A key highlight of the session was the announcement of a forthcoming economic patriotism bill. The proposed legislation aims to anchor industrial and commercial activities locally, thereby reinforcing the country’s economic sovereignty.
For Sonko, the success of this policy hinges on a well-structured domestic private sector, which he described as a vital engine for growth and unemployment reduction. « A robust private sector must be supported by its government, » he concluded, urging collective mobilization to meet the aspirations of Senegal’s youth sustainably.
