Senegal’s political upheaval: Dakar divided over sonko’s dismissal

In Senegal, the recent dismissal of the Prime Minister has intensified the political discourse throughout Dakar. Following the presidential announcement that ended Ousmane Sonko’s tenure, residents of the capital find themselves grappling with mixed emotions, from deep resignation to a sense of abandonment, after months of simmering tensions between the nation’s two highest executive figures.
“Thank goodness. For us, Sonko’s supporters, this is exactly what we anticipated. Ousmane Sonko achieved more than any previous minister in Senegal’s history. We will stand by him with more pride than ever. Bassirou Diomaye Faye, on the other hand, has behaved immaturely,” declared Ibrahima Dione, a Dakar resident.
Removed from his post along with his entire cabinet, the leader of the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF) has so far offered only a brief comment on social media. This limited reaction does little to conceal the deepening crisis at the highest levels of government.
“This dismissal is quite unsettling. I was surprised to learn the news. The announcement felt sudden. It’s not beneficial for the country. Senegal needs jobs, not political drama,” explained Modou Diaw, another Dakar resident.
President Diomaye Faye owes his executive office to Sonko’s immense popularity, which generated passionate enthusiasm among Senegalese youth. However, observers suggest that the now-former Prime Minister made a series of controversial public statements that reportedly irked the head of state.
“Many Senegalese were expecting this. The president is the one who appoints. It is his prerogative to appoint and remove officials. I believe that if it serves the country’s best interest, then it is the right course of action,” stated Thierno Sow, a resident of Dakar.
PASTEF secured a decisive victory in the first round of the March 2024 elections, campaigning on a platform promising profound political change and a vigorous fight against public mismanagement.
