Togo’s media and cultural landscape is in mourning following the passing of Eugène Kossi Atigan-Ameti, widely known as Eugène Atigan, on June 3, 2026. His death marks the loss of one of the most influential figures in the country’s audiovisual sector.
For decades, Eugène Atigan shaped entertainment and cultural promotion on national television. As a presenter, producer, and communicator, he captivated generations of viewers through iconic shows like Télé Loisirs, Couleurs des Vacances, and Le Cabaret de la Saint-Valentin. His professionalism, eloquence, and innovative approach earned him recognition as a leading voice in Togolese media. Many journalists and presenters who now shine in the industry credit him as a mentor, shaping their careers in front of the camera.
An unexpected turn in a remarkable career
The trajectory of Eugène Atigan’s life took a dramatic turn in 2009 when he was arrested at Lomé’s international airport in connection with a drug trafficking case. Sentenced to ten years in prison, he served eight before regaining his freedom in September 2017.
Even behind bars, Atigan remained committed to creativity and social impact. He organized cultural activities within Lomé’s civil prison, fostering artistic expression among inmates. His dedication to prisoner rehabilitation and human values earned widespread admiration from observers and peers alike.

Upon his release, Eugène Atigan chose to rebuild his life and career. In 2018, he launched Le Super Cabaret, a bold new television concept blending variety shows, debates, and spotlight on Togolese artists.
