Unrest in Benin as Putsch Attempt Fails — President Talon Remains in Control

Tensions flared in Benin on Sunday as a group of soldiers proclaimed themselves the “Military Committee for Refoundation” and announced the removal of President Patrice Talon during a broadcast on national television. However, government sources swiftly countered the claims, asserting that the president was safe and that the situation was under control.

What Happened in Cotonou?

Benin‘s capital, Cotonou, experienced moments of alarm as gunfire was reported near the presidential residence. The French Embassy issued a security advisory, urging French citizens to remain indoors. Yet, military officials confirmed that the attempted coup had failed to gain any foothold in key government institutions.

A spokesperson for President Talon stated firmly: “This is a small group that controls only the television station. The regular army has reasserted control. The city and the country are fully secure.” Authorities also clarified that the putschists had not seized the presidential palace or the president’s residence.

Political Context and Regional Instability

Since the beginning of the decade, West Africa has seen a wave of coups, including in Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Guinea, and most recently, Guinea-Bissau in late November. These events have heightened regional instability and drawn international concern.

President Talon, who has led Benin since 2016, is nearing the end of his second and final term in 2026, as mandated by the constitution. His administration has faced criticism for tightening political freedoms, despite economic progress under his leadership.

Opposition and Governance Challenges

The country’s main opposition party has been excluded from the upcoming presidential election, which will feature only the ruling party and a self-described “moderate” opponent. Critics argue that Patrice Talon has shifted Benin toward a more authoritarian direction, reversing its long-standing reputation for democratic vibrancy.

International Response and Ongoing Monitoring

While the situation in Benin appears resolved, regional observers continue to monitor developments closely. The government has vowed to restore full stability, with one military source remarking: “It’s only a matter of time before everything returns to normal. The cleanup operation is progressing as planned.”

For now, Benin stands firm — its institutions intact, its president secure, and its people resilient in the face of yet another challenge to regional peace.
