Archbishop muteba’s urgent call for unity as dr Congo marks 66 years of independence

Mgr Fulgence Muteba, archevêque de Lubumbashi

As the Democratic Republic of Congo commemorated its 66th anniversary of independence, Mgr Fulgence Muteba Mugalu, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Lubumbashi and President of the National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO), delivered a compelling appeal for national reconciliation, heartfelt forgiveness, and strengthened national cohesion.

In his homily this Tuesday at the Saints-Pierre-et-Paul Cathedral in Lubumbashi, the revered prelate issued a stark warning: the nation risks jeopardizing its very future if it fails to decisively embrace the path toward lasting peace.

Addressing an assembly of religious leaders, Catholic adherents, and distinguished guests gathered to observe the national holiday, Archbishop Muteba implored all Congolese citizens to transform this independence milestone into an opportunity for profound reflection on the country’s destiny.

« We must evolve into a nation that commands both respect and reverence. To navigate our current challenges, a collective consensus is essential for building sustainable peace. It is imperative that we extend forgiveness to one another, seek reconciliation, and solidify our national unity founded on the philosophy of living together. Should we deviate from this course, the profound risk of losing our country becomes imminent. We are thus forewarned, » declared the CENCO president.

Sustainable peace: a prerequisite for Congo’s future

Against a backdrop characterized by ongoing security concerns, political tensions, and societal fractures, the leader of the Congolese Catholic Church underscored the urgent need for a unified national effort. He asserted that the RDC’s true potential and greatness can only be realized if its people prioritize open dialogue, mutual absolution, and an unwavering commitment to the common good.

His message illuminates the critical urgency of overcoming existing divisions to forge a national consensus capable of cementing enduring peace and safeguarding the country’s fundamental unity.

The philosophy of living together: central to national progress

Mgr Fulgence Muteba particularly emphasized the philosophy of « vivre-ensemble » (living together), identifying it as the indispensable cornerstone for robust national cohesion. In his view, no political, economic, or institutional reform can achieve sustainable and meaningful results without embracing this fundamental principle of harmonious coexistence.
