Bénin and Niger lift barriers to boost bilateral ties
Cotonou and Niamey have reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepen collaboration across multiple spheres during President Romuald Wadagni’s official visit to Niger on June 2. The visit, extended at the invitation of Niger’s President Abdourahamane Tiani, culminated in a joint communiqué outlining concrete steps to revitalize bilateral relations.
The two leaders underscored the urgency of strengthening political, economic, scientific, and cultural ties between their nations. A key agreement was reached to enhance mutual exchanges by reinvigorating the regular sessions of the Niger-Bénin Joint Cooperation Commission, a platform designed to foster structured dialogue and actionable outcomes.
A pivotal decision was made to prioritize the reopening of the Bénin-Niger border, a critical artery for regional trade and mobility that had been closed for an extended period due to past tensions. Both Presidents resolved to dismantle all obstacles hindering deeper cooperation, with a dedicated committee of experts tasked with identifying and proposing solutions within 15 days.
The discussions between Wadagni and Tiani, involving their respective delegations, unfolded in a spirit of openness and mutual respect. The leaders conducted a thorough review of shared challenges, alongside regional and global issues shaping the current geopolitical landscape.
The two Presidents celebrated the long-standing bonds of friendship and cooperation uniting their countries. They reiterated their dedication to elevating bilateral collaboration to align with the aspirations of their citizens, who yearn for stability, security, and sustainable development.
President Wadagni, who assumed office on May 24, has made the normalization of relations with neighboring states a cornerstone of his agenda. In a gesture of reciprocity, he extended an invitation to President Tiani for an official visit to Bénin in the near future.
