Following President Romuald Wadagni‘s official visit to Niamey on June 2, Benin and Niger have intensified diplomatic efforts to restore cross-border cooperation. A high-level technical committee meeting convened in Cotonou on June 20 brought together security, economic, and legal experts from both nations to lay the groundwork for reopening their shared border.

The session, co-chaired by Niger’s State Minister of Security, General Mohamed Toumba, and Benin’s Minister of African Integration, Adjadi Bakari, focused on critical pillars including border security protocols, customs harmonization, and joint defense strategies.

While discussions remain confidential, sources indicate that negotiators are prioritizing three key areas: security reinforcement, trade facilitation, and legal frameworks before finalizing any border reopening agreements. The talks, which began on Saturday, are expected to continue through Sunday.

Both countries have acknowledged the mutual benefits of restoring normal relations, particularly for regional economic integration and cross-border mobility. A formal announcement on the border’s reopening is anticipated once all pending protocols are signed and ratified.
