Boko Haram resurgence in Lake Chad province threatens regional stability

Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno made a firm pledge following the latest violent escalation. In a statement released on May 5, he declared, ‘We will intensify our fight with unwavering resolve until this menace is completely eradicated.’ His words came in response to a brazen assault carried out the day before by an offshoot of the Islamist militant group Boko Haram on the Barka Tolorom military base, situated along the Chadian shoreline of Lake Chad. The attack resulted in the tragic loss of 24 soldiers.
