The Republic of Chad made a significant stride in climate action this week during its participation in the World Urban Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan. The nation was officially named the 11th eligible country for the Building Climate Resilience of Urban Populations (BCRUP) program under the United Nations Green Climate Fund, expanding the initiative from its previous 10-member roster.
This milestone underscores Chad’s commitment to addressing pressing urban challenges, including recurrent flooding, mass displacement, and the escalating impacts of climate change affecting its cities. The country’s inclusion reflects both its vulnerability to environmental crises and its proactive stance in seeking sustainable solutions.
During the forum’s proceedings, Chad’s delegation, led by Minister Mahamat Assileck Halata, held high-level discussions with the Executive Director of UN-Habitat. The meetings focused on urban resilience strategies and potential collaboration frameworks. Following these talks, an initial project proposal secured provisional funding between $900,000 and $1 million—a stepping stone toward larger UN-Habitat investments anticipated in the coming months.
