Chad secures major urban development opportunities in Baku forum

During a special briefing at the Ministry of Territorial Planning, Urbanism, and Housing, Chad unveiled the outcomes of its delegation’s participation in the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku, Azerbaijan. The high-level restitution session, attended by key stakeholders including the First Deputy Mayor of N’Djamena, representatives from the National Housing and Urban Development Corporation (SOPROFIM), and UN-Habitat officials, highlighted the country’s strategic gains in sustainable urban development.

Key achievements and international partnerships

The Chadian delegation engaged in intensive discussions on pressing urban challenges, focusing on affordable housing, climate-resilient city planning, and sustainable urban growth. A dedicated Chad pavilion showcased the country’s flagship urban projects, drawing attention from global development partners.

The forum also facilitated high-level meetings that resulted in a landmark agreement: UN-Habitat’s Executive Director will conduct an official visit to Chad from September 9 to 11, 2026. This mission will assess urban realities on the ground and review multiple project proposals submitted by national authorities.

Another major breakthrough came when Chad was selected as one of ten countries eligible for the United Nations Green Climate Fund, following advocacy efforts supported by Kenya. This eligibility unlocks potential funding streams for climate adaptation initiatives, particularly in flood-prone urban areas.

Regional cooperation takes center stage

Bilateral discussions with Kenya and Morocco paved the way for new partnerships in social housing, slum upgrading, and sustainable urban renewal. Future exchange programs and joint missions are being planned to share best practices and foster collaborative projects.

The Minister emphasized that these developments mark a turning point for Chad’s urban future. By leveraging these international opportunities, the country is poised to implement transformative projects that will directly benefit its growing urban populations. The participation in WUF13 underscores Chad’s commitment to inclusive, climate-adaptive, and sustainable urban development, aligning with the national vision outlined by the President of the Republic.
