This Friday, May 22, senior government officials and international partners gathered in N’Djamena to unveil plans for the upcoming African Water Forum, scheduled for July 15–16, 2026. Tahir Hamid Nguilin, Chad’s Minister of State and Minister of Finance, and Farouk Mollah Banna, the World Bank’s Resident Representative in Chad, jointly addressed the media to highlight the significance of this continental event.
The Minister of State expressed deep satisfaction with Chad’s role as host. « We take immense pride in welcoming this pivotal continental gathering to our nation, » he stated. « The African Water Forum: From Vision to Action will convene in N’Djamena on July 15 and 16, 2026, marking a historic moment for Chad and the entire region. »
He emphasized Chad’s rich water heritage, citing the mighty Lake Chad, its vast river systems, and vital lakes such as Fitri, Léré, and Iro. He also pointed to the country’s shared transboundary basins, including the Nubian Aquifer and critical systems like the Barh Aouk, Batha, Chari, and Logone, which sustain ecosystems and communities across West and Central Africa.
Yet, despite these abundant resources, Chad faces pressing water-related challenges. Climate change, rapid population growth, and aging hydraulic infrastructure threaten water security. For the Minister of State, these realities underscore the urgent need for regional and continental collaboration. « The challenges we face demand collective action, » he noted. « Hosting this forum demonstrates Chad’s commitment to placing water security at the forefront of our national agenda and strengthening our partnerships with African peers. »
Farouk Mollah Banna, the World Bank’s Resident Representative, announced a substantial financial commitment to support Chad’s water sector. « A landmark project valued at $160 million is currently under preparation, » he revealed. « Scheduled for board review just two weeks before the forum, this initiative will drive critical improvements in water access, infrastructure resilience, and sustainable resource management. »
The African Water Forum will bring together policymakers, technical experts, and financial partners from across the continent. Together, they will explore actionable strategies to enhance water governance, promote equitable access, and build resilience against climate-induced water scarcity. This high-level dialogue aims to translate visionary plans into tangible results that benefit millions across Africa.
