Representatives of the Chadian Magistrates’ Union (SMT) and the Autonomous Chadian Magistrates’ Union (SYAMAT) have submitted a formal complaint against Ali Ahmat Aghabache, the country’s Minister of Public Security and Immigration, to the Chief Prosecutor of the N’Djamena Court of Appeal.
The two unions allege that the minister’s actions have severely undermined the integrity of the judiciary and the dignity owed to magistrates. This accusation stems from a public statement made by the minister on May 24, 2026, which was widely circulated online. The statement contained what many in the legal community describe as disrespectful and defamatory remarks directed at judicial professionals, sparking widespread outrage.
In their complaint, the magistrates argue that the minister’s statements violate legal provisions pertaining to public discrediting of judicial acts, contempt of court, and defamation against a constituted body. Their case references specific articles of the Penal Code (Articles 142, 144, and following) and the Code of Criminal Procedure (Articles 527 and 528) to support their claims.
The unions have urged the Chief Prosecutor to initiate a formal judicial investigation, pursue all legal avenues, and uphold the dignity, independence, and authority of the judiciary.
