Cholera outbreak confirmed in Burkina Faso: first cases identified in Kantchari
Health authorities in Burkina Faso have officially declared the onset of a cholera outbreak after confirming multiple cases in the eastern region of the country.

The Ministry of Health of Burkina Faso confirmed the first confirmed cholera case on June 25, 2025 at the Kantchari Medical Center (CM) in the Tapoa province, located in the eastern region. The patient, a 25-year-old man from the Boudiéri market area in Kantchari, presented severe symptoms including watery diarrhea, uncontrollable vomiting, and signs of dehydration.
Laboratory tests conducted by health authorities confirmed the presence of Vibrio cholerae serogroup 01 and serotype Ogawa, confirming the cholera diagnosis. The patient was immediately isolated and treated, while health teams began tracing and monitoring all contact cases. A second confirmed case was reported on July 5 in the same locality, with symptoms manifesting rapidly.
