Dakar court takes on Ousmane Sonko over remarks on Touba

The descendants of Serigne Touba have taken legal action against Ousmane Sonko, filing a formal complaint with the prosecutor’s office in Dakar. The complaint, registered under case number 12562, follows remarks attributed to the PASTEF leader during the inauguration of his party’s headquarters last weekend, where he allegedly stated that “dirty money entered the sacred city of Touba.”

The plaintiffs, represented by Serigne Modou Maroun Niang and Serigne Mourtalla Bousso, argue that these comments tarnish the honor, reputation, and image of Touba and its residents. They emphasize that the religious city, founded by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, is built on principles of faith, integrity, probity, hard work, and justice. To them, such statements cast unwarranted doubt on the city’s moral and spiritual standing, potentially harming its global perception.

The collective is urging the prosecutor to launch a thorough investigation to verify the accuracy of Sonko’s claims and assess their legal implications. They are specifically requesting that Sonko be summoned to clarify his remarks and provide any supporting evidence. If the investigation deems it necessary, they call for legal proceedings, potentially including charges of defamation, spreading false information, or other relevant offenses under Senegalese law.
