French prime minister visits Morocco amid free speech concerns

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu arrived in Rabat on July 15 for a two-day official visit, during which several key agreements will be signed. The trip also paves the way for a future state visit by King Mohammed VI to France.

The delegation includes over a dozen ministers, such as Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Laurent Nuñez, Minister of the Interior. Their agenda features discussions on economic cooperation, judicial collaboration, and defense strategies. “Regional security remains a top priority for both Paris and Rabat,” a senior diplomat noted, highlighting concerns over the volatile Sahel region and the looming threat of increased terrorism in the area.

This visit marks the first international diplomatic engagement for Lecornu since assuming office at Matignon. Just the day before, on July 14, he was in Qatar to convey France’s condolences following the passing of the former Emir, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

The timing of this Moroccan visit carries significant weight, as diplomatic relations between the two nations experienced strain between 2021 and 2022. The renewed engagement underscores efforts to restore and strengthen bilateral ties.
