The Diomaye Président coalition has strongly criticized recent statements made by Ousmane Sonko during the inauguration of the Pastef headquarters in Mbacké. Coalition leaders argue that his remarks were disrespectful toward the Head of State and violate the principles of responsible leadership expected from a high-ranking official.
a call for decorum in political discourse
Bassirou Dieng, a prominent member of the coalition, emphasized that such statements undermine the foundations of a functioning democracy. “In a constitutional state or a democracy that values respect, it is unacceptable for a National Assembly President to make derogatory remarks about the Head of State,” he stated in an interview. He added that Sonko’s comments have sparked widespread outrage on social media and in news outlets, with nearly all reactions condemning the inflammatory nature of his statements.
Dieng went further, urging Sonko to exercise restraint and reconsider his approach to public communication. “Since his remarks in Mbacké, reactions have flooded social platforms and media channels. Virtually no one supports his statements—everyone condemns them as scandalous,” he noted, calling on Sonko to “show greater prudence.”
tougher stance against institutional attacks
The coalition has vowed to respond more decisively to what it views as repeated attacks on state institutions. “The Diomaye Président coalition will not remain silent. From now on, we will no longer tolerate derogatory remarks against the President or other officials who embody the Republic,” Dieng declared. His remarks come just one day after Sonko’s controversial statements ignited political debate and deepened divisions within the presidential majority.
Sonko’s remarks in Mbacké have since dominated discussions, with many questioning the implications for Senegal’s political climate and institutional stability.
