Dr Jean Baptiste Nikiema officially begins mandate as WHO representative in Niger

In a formal ceremony held in Niamey, Dr Jean Baptiste Nikiema officially stepped into his role as the new Resident Representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Niger. He presented his credentials to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Nigeriens Abroad, His Excellence Bakary Yaou Sangaré. This event, attended by senior ministry officials and WHO staff, reaffirms the enduring partnership between the organization and the Republic of Niger.

Strategic health priorities and national collaboration

Following the official presentation, Minister Sangaré and Dr Nikiema engaged in high-level discussions regarding global and regional health challenges. The Minister highlighted the critical technical advisory role of the WHO and stressed the necessity of a robust partnership to strengthen the national health framework for the benefit of the population.

The dialogue identified several key areas for immediate cooperation:

  • Expansion of primary healthcare services.
  • Strengthening the resilience of the national health system.
  • Advancing maternal and child health initiatives.
  • Managing health determinants and disease prevention.
  • Enhancing preparedness and response strategies for sanitary emergencies.

Dr Nikiema commended the leadership of Niger for its significant strides in public health, particularly in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality, combating vaccine-preventable diseases, and achieving progress in the elimination of onchocerciasis. He also expressed gratitude for the government’s support during the WHO’s operational financial challenges and praised Niger’s efforts in digitalizing healthcare and promoting telemedicine.

A distinguished career in public health

A native of Burkina Faso, Dr Jean Baptiste Nikiema brings over three decades of expertise in public health and health diplomacy to his new post. His extensive background spans pharmacological research, universal health coverage, and the management of complex health crises.

Before his appointment in Niger, he held several prominent positions, including:

  • Deputy Representative for the WHO in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
  • WHO Regional Advisor for Africa focusing on essential medicines and health products.
  • Director General of Pharmacy, Medicine, and Laboratories in Burkina Faso.
  • Chairman of the Board for the Muraz Centre.

Dr Nikiema has been a pivotal figure in the establishment of the African Medicines Agency and has championed local pharmaceutical production across the continent. His academic contributions are equally significant, having authored over fifty scientific publications and mentored dozens of doctoral and master’s students in medicine and public health.

Fluent in both English and French, Dr Nikiema is committed to supporting Niger’s health sovereignty. His vision for this mandate focuses on improving operational efficiency, prioritizing essential health interventions, and mobilizing new resources to align with the strategic health goals of Niger.
