DRC and UNFPA champion youth for sustainable national growth

JOINT PRESS STATEMENT

Kinshasa, July 11, 2026 – As the world observes World Population Day (WPD), the Democratic Republic of Congo is taking decisive action. With a remarkable 65% of its populace under the age of 25, the nation is dedicating this significant occasion to a powerful theme: “Realizing the hopes and aspirations of young people – today and for the future.”

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Ministry of Plan are issuing a critical call to action, emphasizing that the country’s future prosperity hinges on transforming the immense potential of its youth into a catalyst for growth. Amidst evolving global demographic landscapes, the DRC strategically views its youthful age structure as a profound national advantage.

The ‘Lives, Choices and Futures’ Survey: Unveiling Youth Aspirations

A groundbreaking UNFPA report, based on a comprehensive survey of 100,000 young individuals across 73 countries, dispels common misconceptions. Congolese youth, mirroring their global counterparts, aspire to establish families. However, their aspirations are often hindered by significant structural barriers, including economic instability, precarious employment opportunities, and inadequate housing.

For 88% of these young people, financial security is an indispensable prerequisite for parenthood. This sentiment does not reflect a disinterest in family life but rather a resounding plea for enhanced opportunities and greater stability.

As highlighted by the UNFPA Executive Director in her WPD message, population policies built on coercion are destined to fail if they do not address the very obstacles identified by young people themselves. Echoing the words of a young community leader, “It’s not just about choosing to have fewer children. It’s about having fewer choices.”

DRC: Transforming Challenges into Development Drivers

In response to prevailing crises, particularly in the eastern regions of the country, UNFPA and the Government are deepening their collaborative efforts. This strengthened partnership, aligned with the National Strategic Development Plan (PNSD 2024-2028), is anchored on two core pillars:

  • UNFPA actively supports improved access to reproductive health services and quality education. This empowers young people, especially vulnerable girls and women, to exercise complete autonomy over their bodies and lives.

  • UNFPA is assisting the DRC in accelerating the second General Census of Population and Housing (RGPH2) and developing Demographic Dividend (DD) profiles across provinces. This strategic approach ensures that investments are effectively channeled to areas where the needs of young people are most pressing.

An Urgent Call for Productive Investment

UNFPA unequivocally states that investing in youth is not a budgetary burden but rather the most productive and impactful investment a nation can make. Lasting prosperity will only be achieved when young people are equipped with the resources and opportunities to contribute fully to the national fabric.

Young people – from North to South, East to West – have spoken. It’s time to listen. And it’s time to help create the conditions that allow them to make real choices, start the families they desire, and fulfill their hopes and aspirations,” the UNFPA Executive Director emphasized.

UNFPA and the Ministry of Plan are inviting all development partners, civil society organizations, and the private sector to engage in constructive dialogue. The goal is to sustainably reshape the national narrative and collectively build the Congolese nation of tomorrow: innovative, robust, and resilient.
