The Kingdom of Morocco is actively participating in the second Political Conference focusing on the crucial nexus between peace, security, and development, held from July 11 to 12 in Mombasa, Kenya.
This significant gathering represents a direct continuation of the inaugural Political Conference on the peace, security, and development nexus, which took place in Tanger from October 25 to 27, 2022. That foundational event culminated in the adoption of the landmark Tanger Declaration. This declaration solidified an integrated African perspective on the nexus, emphasizing the vital need for coordinated public policies, robust partnerships, and the implementation of tangible projects designed to foster lasting peace, enhanced security, and sustainable development across the African continent.
The Tanger Process has firmly established itself as the leading continental platform for dialogue concerning the intricate interdependence of peace, security, and development throughout Africa. It convenes key continental and international stakeholders committed to this domain, including the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the United Nations Development Programme, the African Export-Import Bank, and the African Development Bank.
The core objective of this second Mombasa conference is to meticulously evaluate the progress achieved in the implementation of the Tanger Declaration. Furthermore, it aims to pinpoint practical, operational strategies that can further strengthen the essential link between peace, security, and development within Africa.
Discussions at the conference are structured around five specialized panels. These sessions delve into topics such as the practical implementation of the Tanger Declaration through focused thematic projects, the transformative role of artificial intelligence and youth-driven innovations, the critical relationship between security expenditures and broader development goals, strategies for mobilizing financing for Nexus projects, and invaluable lessons learned from the African Union’s support for complex political transitions across the continent.
During these proceedings, the Moroccan delegation, led by Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi, the Kingdom’s Permanent Representative to both the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, will articulate Morocco’s comprehensive vision. This vision advocates for an integrated approach to peace, security, and development, underpinned by the reinforcement of strategic partnerships and the promotion of distinctly African solutions that are finely tuned to the continent’s unique priorities and realities.
