On 22 June 2026, the European Union ambassador to Gabon, Cécile Abadie, met with the mayor of Libreville, Eugène Mba, to further strengthen ties between the EU and the Gabonese capital. The meeting came as local governments are expected to take on a bigger role in implementing development policies. The two leaders discussed cooperation projects that could support Libreville’s modernisation efforts and improve living conditions for its residents.
During the talks, Mayor Mba outlined the main priorities of his municipal agenda, stressing the need to diversify funding sources for local authorities. He also highlighted the importance of international cooperation. Eugène Mba reaffirmed his commitment to deepening decentralized cooperation in order to drive projects in key sectors, making the city more attractive to technical and financial partners.
Eu embassy at the heart of institutional rapprochement
Cécile Abadie, the EU representative in Gabon, reiterated her institution’s commitment to maintaining close dialogue with Libreville’s municipal authorities. The ambassador presented the current strategic directions of the European Union and noted that shifts in the global context require ongoing adjustments to cooperation mechanisms. The EU intends to continue exchanges with the municipality to identify areas of intervention that align with local priorities and the expectations of the people. This approach underscores the central role of the European diplomatic mission in fostering effective partnerships.
Waste management, considered a major challenge for Libreville, was also a key topic in the discussions. Both sides agreed on the value of exploring new avenues to support the municipality’s efforts in this critical area. The EU is already working alongside Gabonese authorities on the dismantling of the Mindoube site and the construction of a household waste recovery plant. This meeting reflects a shared determination to consolidate relations between the City of Libreville and the European Union.
