Gabonese Head of State Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema has confirmed plans for an official visit to France on July 20, 2026, marking a significant step in bilateral relations.
Strengthening franco-gabonese ties through diplomatic engagement
This upcoming visit follows the resumption of high-level dialogue between Libreville and Paris since the conclusion of Gabon’s political transition. Both nations are expected to prioritize discussions on critical areas including economic cooperation, environmental conservation—particularly the forests of the Congo Basin—skills development, and regional security challenges.
Recent exchanges between Gabon and France
President Oligui Nguema’s first official trip to France occurred in late May 2024, spanning four days from the 27th to the 31st. The visit culminated in a meeting at the Élysée Palace with French President Emmanuel Macron, where they reaffirmed commitments across economic, political, trade, and environmental domains, with a shared focus on biodiversity preservation and climate action.
The 2024 engagement also featured a high-profile Franco-Gabonese economic forum in Paris, bringing together over 600 business leaders, alongside interactions with the Gabonese diaspora in France. The upcoming 2026 visit will represent the second official state visit by President Oligui Nguema to France since assuming office in August 2023.
France’s reciprocal engagement in Gabon
French President Emmanuel Macron has made two official visits to Gabon since 2017, most recently in November 2025. During that trip, he was received at Léon-Mba International Airport by Gabon’s leader, emphasizing a partnership built on equal footing and mutual respect.
The stated goals of Macron’s 2025 visit were to recognize the completion of Gabon’s political transition and to support the country’s new leadership in a renewed political framework. The discussions led to concrete initiatives, including enhanced training for Gabonese security forces, the establishment of an academy dedicated to natural resource protection, and French-backed efforts to modernize the Transgabonais railway network.
With the July 2026 visit now confirmed, President Oligui Nguema is reinforcing Gabon’s commitment to maintaining a balanced and forward-looking partnership with France. The sequence of visits—from Libreville in November 2025 to Paris in May 2024 and back to Paris in July 2026—signals a dynamic and accelerating diplomatic calendar between the two nations.
