Togo: night fire devastates Kpalimé’s Château market

An overnight blaze has wreaked havoc on the main market in Kpalimé, located in the Kloto 1 municipality, leaving a trail of destruction but thankfully no casualties.

How the fire unfolded

Shortly after midnight, flames erupted in the market’s resettlement zone. Given the wooden stalls and highly combustible materials, the fire spread rapidly to adjacent stands and shelters, engulfing a significant portion of the market area.

Emergency teams, including firefighters, local police, and the National Civil Protection Agency (ANPC), were alerted and arrived promptly. Their efforts were crucial in containing the inferno during the night, preventing it from consuming the entire commercial complex.

Damage assessment

Initial reports indicate:

  • Human toll: No lives lost, and no injuries reported.
  • Material losses: Numerous stalls destroyed, with substantial quantities of foodstuffs, textiles, and various goods belonging to traders reduced to ashes.

Ongoing investigation and support

Local authorities have launched an investigation to pinpoint the exact cause of the fire. Meanwhile, the ANPC and municipal services are working to register affected vendors and accurately evaluate the financial impact on the market community.
