Granit Xhaka appears on the verge of completing a move to Chelsea. On Saturday, reports emerged from journalist Luca Cerchione indicating that the London club had tabled a €30 million offer to secure the midfielder’s services. Further developments suggest that the 33-year-old player has already reached a personal agreement with the Blues, according to journalist Florian Plettenberg.
“Exclusive information: Granit Xhaka and Chelsea have already reached a verbal agreement regarding a transfer,” Plettenberg announced on X on Saturday evening. “A full agreement has already been found on personal terms.”
It is understood that Chelsea is also actively engaging in discussions with Sunderland. Interestingly, Xabi Alonso is reportedly making significant efforts to recruit Xhaka. Alonso and Xhaka share a history, having played together at Bayer Leverkusen between 2023 and 2025.
Xhaka’s professional journey began at FC Basel, followed by stints at Borussia Mönchengladbach, Arsenal, and Leverkusen, before joining Sunderland a year ago in a €15 million transfer.
During his time with Sunderland, a club that impressively secured a seventh-place finish in the Premier League last season, the Swiss international featured in 36 official matches. He contributed with one goal and six assists for the team.
Xhaka’s current contract with Sunderland extends until mid-2028. His market value is presently estimated at €8 million.
The left-footed midfielder, who boasts 149 international appearances to date, is currently captaining Switzerland at the World Cup. He has been an ever-present figure, playing every minute of the group stage. Switzerland concluded Group B at the top of the standings and is now set to face a third-placed team in the next round.
