Ivory Coast reiterates backing for Morocco’s Sahara autonomy initiative
Diplomatic support expressed at UN regional seminar in Managua
During a United Nations regional seminar held in Managua, the delegation from Côte d’Ivoire publicly reaffirmed its unwavering support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara. This endorsement comes as part of a broader diplomatic engagement aimed at resolving the decades-long territorial dispute through peaceful and negotiated means.
The Ivorian representatives underscored the plan’s credibility, noting that it has garnered backing from nearly 130 countries worldwide. They emphasized its alignment with international law principles and UN resolutions, particularly highlighting the UN Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted in 2025, which recognizes the initiative as a viable framework for dialogue.
A blueprint for local governance and development
The Ivorian delegation highlighted the autonomy initiative’s potential to empower the populations of Morocco’s southern provinces by granting them greater control over their political and economic affairs. They pointed out that the plan includes provisions for regular democratic elections and the inclusion of local representatives in international forums, ensuring that local voices shape regional policies.
Additionally, Côte d’Ivoire praised the progress made in human rights protections within the framework of the autonomy plan. This includes the establishment of regional commissions and collaboration with UN human rights mechanisms. The delegation also raised concerns about the Tindouf camps, calling for an updated census of their populations to ensure transparency and accountability.
Commitment to a UN-led political solution
In concluding its statement, the Ivorian delegation restated its firm commitment to a political solution under the exclusive aegis of the United Nations. It urged all involved parties to adopt a pragmatic and compromise-driven approach to achieve a sustainable resolution to the conflict.
The position taken by Côte d’Ivoire reflects the growing international recognition of Morocco’s autonomy plan as a credible pathway toward resolving the Sahara issue. This stance aligns with the broader diplomatic efforts to foster stability and cooperation in the region.
