The Al-Qaeda-affiliated armed group, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen (JNIM), has released a propaganda video showcasing its assault on April 25 against the military camp and airport in Sévaré, a critical location near Mopti in central Mali.
This particular attack on Sévaré was part of a series of meticulously coordinated operations targeting several Malian urban centers. These assaults were executed by JNIM jihadists alongside Tuareg separatists from the Front de libération de l’Azawad (FLA).
According to analyst Bakary Sambe, who serves as the director of the Timbuktu Institute, this propaganda footage vividly illustrates the ongoing strategic shifts within JNIM.
“JNIM has demonstrated a remarkable capability to infiltrate urban environments and highly strategic zones, such as the Sévaré airport and military base,” Mr. Sambe observed. “Their actions are now causing significant concern for both the Malian army and its Russian allies.”
The synchronized attacks in April culminated in the separatists’ recapture of Kidal and tragically led to the assassination of Malian Defense Minister Sadio Camara in Kati, situated near Bamako.
The Malian government reported that these attacks also resulted in 16 injuries.
“What JNIM has successfully achieved is to gradually plunge Mali into a state that is neither peace nor outright war,” Bakary Sambe further elaborated. “Within this ambiguous environment, they are deploying an increasingly aggressive strategy.” He also highlighted the rise of figures like Bina Diarra, a JNIM spokesperson, who is instrumental in solidifying the group’s image as a “legitimate political actor.”
The release of this propaganda video coincides with Malian authorities announcing rewards for any information leading to the location or capture of JNIM leaders, underscoring the government’s continued counter-terrorism efforts against the group.
