My reporting indicates that the highly anticipated transfer of Johan Manzambi to Newcastle United has collapsed at the eleventh hour. While the operation seemed certain in recent days, SC Fribourg now appears poised to secure a record-breaking transfer fee from the Premier League, with an agreement with Aston Villa reportedly taking shape.

  • Newcastle had previously reached an understanding with Fribourg regarding a €60 million transfer fee. The Magpies had envisioned Manzambi as a direct replacement for Sandro Tonali, who is reportedly on the verge of a move to Tottenham Hotspur for an amount exceeding €100 million. However, the negotiations ultimately failed in their final phase, as Manzambi himself reportedly declined to approve the transfer.

The promising young attacker has now, I understand, given his consent to a transfer to Aston Villa, a club that has secured qualification for the Champions League. With Newcastle having withdrawn from discussions, talks between the rival Premier League club and SC Fribourg are now rapidly accelerating.

Current estimates suggest the total value of the deal, including potential bonuses, could reach approximately €70 million. Should all parties finalize an agreement, Manzambi would become the most expensive transfer in the history of the Brisgau-based club, significantly surpassing the €25 million fees previously paid for Kevin Schade (FC Brentford) and Merlin Röhl (FC Everton).

  • Manzambi’s world cup journey: from dazzling displays to injury setbacks

During the recent World Cup tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the 20-year-old talent captivated audiences with his exceptional performances for the Swiss national team. In a notable instance, during the second group stage match against Bosnia, he was introduced in the 71st minute and subsequently emerged as the match-winner, scoring a crucial late double.

His impressive displays earned him his first starting spot of the tournament in the final group stage fixture against Canada, where he validated coach Murat Yakin’s faith by contributing another goal and an assist. He also provided a key assist during the Round of 16 clash against Algeria.

Despite Manzambi’s absence from the field due to a knee injury, the Swiss squad advanced to the quarterfinals, securing a 4-3 victory in a penalty shootout against Colombia. Unfortunately, Switzerland’s World Cup campaign concluded in the quarterfinals, where they ultimately succumbed to reigning champions Argentina with a 1-3 loss after extra time, with Manzambi still recovering from his injury.

Following that quarterfinal encounter, Manzambi was seen exchanging handshakes with Argentina’s goalkeeper, Emiliano Martínez. The Aston Villa shot-stopper, with a clear smile, extended a playful invitation for Manzambi to consider a move to Birmingham. It appears that Manzambi is now poised to follow that very instinct.
