Le Mans FC celebrates return to Ligue 1 after 16 years
Action on the pitch during the final matchday of Ligue 2 was abruptly halted when smoke bombs were thrown onto the field at the Armand-Cesari stadium. The incident occurred immediately after Le Mans FC scored their second goal in stoppage time, prompting the referee to abandon the match permanently.
Historic promotion sealed despite match abandonment
In an official statement, Le Mans FC hailed their “historic promotion” as a moment of “emotion and pride,” marking their return to France’s top flight after a 16-year absence. The club’s president, Thierry Gomez, emphasized the collective effort behind this achievement: “This promotion to Ligue 1 is a victory for the entire club—a shared triumph. While the road ahead is challenging, our commitment remains unwavering.”
Bastia relegated to National after fan disturbances
The French Football League (LFP) took decisive action against Bastia, imposing a two-game ban and a suspended home match behind closed doors. The decision followed an urgent review of the incident, which validated Le Mans FC’s promotion while confirming Laval’s survival in a dramatic playoff finish that relegated Bastia to the third tier.
Though the official score was not ratified until midweek due to the match abandonment, Le Mans FC’s players wasted no time celebrating their promotion. Victory celebrations began in the locker room on Saturday evening and continued into the night as players greeted supporters outside their training center.
This milestone represents Le Mans FC’s second consecutive promotion, having climbed from the National league in the 2024-2025 season. Earlier this season, Bastia had already forfeited a match against Red Star after a smoke bomb incident injured an opponent, reinforcing the league’s zero-tolerance policy on fan misconduct.
