Lens vs Nice: a cup final packed with history and European ambitions
The Stade de France hosts a thrilling Coupe de France final as RC Lens and OGC Nice battle for a historic trophy and coveted European spots.
For the first time in 27 years without a major trophy, RC Lens faces OGC Nice in the Coupe de France final. With Paris Saint-Germain absent from the equation, the Ligue 1 runners-up and the struggling Nice squad now have a golden opportunity to claim glory.
RC Lens: chasing an elusive dream
RC Lens has reached the Coupe de France final three times in its history—in 1948, 1975, and 1998—yet has never lifted the trophy. Former president Gervais Martel, who led the club from 1988 to 2012 and again from 2013 to 2017, once called this drought an “anomaly.” With a second-place finish in Ligue 1 this season, the Sang et Or are now in prime position to end their trophy-less streak.
Striker Florian Sotoca expressed his ambition to “make history” for the club, though he acknowledged the unique pressure of a final. Coach Pierre Sage and his players must now channel their impressive league form into a knockout competition triumph.
OGC Nice: survival first, cup glory second?
OGC Nice enters the final with far more pressing concerns. The club is mired in a relegation battle, sitting 16th in Ligue 1 and facing a high-stakes playoff against Saint-Etienne just days later. President Jean-Pierre Rivière has already downplayed the importance of the final, stating that “it’s no longer the priority.”
Yet, coach Claude Puel insists his team must approach the match with full intensity. “You can’t just show up and go through the motions,” he warned. “A final is a special moment—you have to fight for it.” Puel now faces a tactical dilemma: field a weakened side to rest key players or rely on his first team to secure both morale and confidence ahead of the playoff.
European implications: who benefits?
A victory in the Coupe de France grants automatic qualification for the UEFA Europa League. Since RC Lens is already secured a Champions League spot via its league finish, the Europa League berth would pass to Stade Rennais, currently in the Europa Conference League playoffs. This, in turn, would open a Champions League spot for AS Monaco, which finished seventh in Ligue 1 and currently has no European qualification.
The final isn’t just about national pride—it could reshape the European landscape for next season. Whether Lens or Nice lifts the trophy, the ripple effects will be felt across French football.
