Mali: AES strongly condemns attacks targeting Sahel’s sovereign path
The Alliance of Sahel States (AES) has issued a powerful statement through its President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, following coordinated terrorist attacks in Mali. This official response goes beyond mere diplomatic condemnation, framing the assault as a direct threat to the entire sovereign agenda of the Sahel region.
In the communiqué, the AES describes the attacks as premeditated, long-planned operations with clear tactical and strategic objectives. The statement emphasizes their organized nature, including sophisticated logistics and a deliberate intent to inflict damage, spread fear, and undermine the region’s push for self-determination. The message is unambiguous: for the AES, terrorism is not just a security challenge—it is a calculated tool aimed at halting the Sahel’s journey toward freedom, sovereignty, and renewal.
The communiqué also praises the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) for their professional, courageous, and resolute response. This deliberate recognition serves multiple purposes: it bolsters the legitimacy of the FAMa, strengthens public morale, and positions Mali’s military actions within a broader Sahelian solidarity framework.
At its core, the AES’s stance is built on three foundational principles: freedom, sovereignty, and dignity. These values now define the political discourse of the confederation, signaling a commitment to transforming adversity into a stronger, unified strategic vision.
For Niger, a key member of this alliance, the communiqué underscores a critical reality: the security of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger is now inseparable. In the face of cross-border threats, the AES advocates for a cohesive political, military, and symbolic response rooted in solidarity among Sahelian peoples.
Reading the full communiqué reveals its deeper significance—it is not just an expression of solidarity but a bold political act that reaffirms AES cohesion and determination to continue the fight.
