Mali’s armed forces eliminate high-ranking jihadist leader in precision drone strike

Mali’s military command has confirmed the neutralization of a prominent jihadist figure linked to the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM). The operation, conducted via drone strike, marks a significant blow to insurgent networks operating in central Mali.

Operation targets influential figure in central Mali

The strike took place on June 3 in the vicinity of Mougnan, approximately 40 kilometers from the historic city of Djenné. The targeted individual, identified by military sources as Oumar Kéréna—also known by aliases Farouk and Housseini Mawdo—had long been a central figure in Mali’s jihadist landscape.

According to the General Staff, Kéréna was formerly associated with the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO) before ascending to a leadership role within the JNIM coalition. His operational footprint extended across multiple regions, including Sikasso, Koutiala, and areas bordering Burkina Faso.

Strategic elimination of a regional threat

Military intelligence indicates that Kéréna played a pivotal role in coordinating armed activities and maintaining supply lines for affiliated groups operating under the JNIM umbrella. The JNIM, recognized as the dominant jihadist alliance in the Sahel and affiliated with Al-Qaeda, has been responsible for numerous attacks across Mali and neighboring nations.

Government escalates counterterrorism measures

The announcement follows a decisive policy shift by Malian authorities. On June 4, the government unveiled an unprecedented rewards program offering up to two billion West African CFA francs for information leading to the capture or elimination of top-tier militant leaders.

The most substantial bounty targets Iyad Ag Ghali, Mali’s most-wanted fugitive and a key figure in the insurgency. This financial incentive underscores Bamako’s commitment to dismantling jihadist networks amid a surge in violent incidents and persistent security challenges across the Sahel.

The drone strike represents the latest in a series of military operations aimed at degrading the operational capacity of armed groups. While security conditions remain volatile, the successful elimination of a high-value target signals intensified pressure on jihadist factions operating within Mali.
