Malian opposition figure’s son vanishes after father’s abduction, lawyers raise alarm

A wave of apprehension sweeps across Mali following the disappearance of the son of prominent opposition figure Mountaga Tall, who himself was abducted earlier in May. Legal representatives for the family are sounding the alarm over these unsettling developments amidst escalating tensions between the military regime and civil society.

The son of Malian lawyer and opposition figure Mountaga Tall was reported missing on May 16, just weeks after his father’s own “abduction” at the beginning of the month. Lawyers representing the family confirmed the dual disappearances on Wednesday, urgently calling for their release.

Mr. Tall was “abducted” on May 2 by “hooded men,” according to his family. This incident occurred in Mali, a Sahelian nation currently governed by a military junta that has increasingly curtailed public freedoms.

Mountaga Tall played a significant role in the M5 movement, a pivotal force in the protests that led to the downfall of former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta (IBK) in 2020. Initially an ally of the military leaders who seized power that same year, he subsequently distanced himself, evolving into a vocal critic of their administration.

In a statement dated Tuesday and disseminated on Wednesday, the family’s legal team expressed profound dismay upon learning of the disappearance of Cheick Mamadou Tall, Mountaga Tall’s eldest son, on Saturday, May 16, following a phone call he received.

The collective of lawyers voiced deep concern over this “illegal act,” which follows closely on the heels of Mountaga Tall’s abduction. Their communiqué, signed by four attorneys, implores the “competent administrative and judicial authorities to exert every effort to ensure both individuals regain their freedom” and that a thorough investigation illuminates the circumstances surrounding their disappearances.

The abduction of Mr. Tall transpired just days after the deadly attacks on April 25. These assaults, carried out by jihadists from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM, affiliated with Al-Qaeda) alongside rebels from the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), targeted strategic positions held by the military regime.

Context of the abductions

Mountaga Tall has been actively involved in defending several military personnel who have been arrested in recent months under the junta’s orders, facing accusations of “attempted destabilization of institutions.”

Furthermore, he has initiated legal challenges in various courts to contest the decision by the ruling military to dissolve Malian political parties.
