The Malian Ministry of Health and Social Development recently acquired 39 robust all-terrain 4×4 vehicles. This strategic delivery, which took place on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at the Ministry’s administrative complex in Bamako, aims to significantly bolster the nation’s healthcare infrastructure and expand vital health service access, particularly for vaccination programs in the most underserved regions.
Valued at an estimated 689 million CFA francs, these crucial assets are the result of a strong, productive alliance between the Malian Ministry of Health and the Gavi Alliance, the global partnership for vaccines. Minister of Health, Assa Badiallo Touré, highlighted that this handover is part of an ongoing commitment, noting that 68 vehicles were previously secured in 2023 with World Bank financing to support COVID-19 immunization efforts. She also indicated that further essential equipment is anticipated later in 2026.
“These new vehicles are set to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of our health facilities, particularly in monitoring health interventions and strengthening vaccination campaigns,” the Minister affirmed in her address. She strongly urged all recipients and drivers to ensure meticulous maintenance of the fleet, stressing the importance of safeguarding these valuable resources amidst current challenges as the Ministry strives to expand its service vehicle pool.
Speaking on behalf of the technical and financial partners, Fosca Giulidori, the UNICEF representative in Mali, underscored the profound symbolism of the occasion. She articulated that “this event transcends a mere transfer of keys; it embodies a potent demonstration of international solidarity, exemplified by Gavi’s steadfast dedication to accelerating global immunization and ensuring equitable access to life-saving vaccines.”
Giulidori further elaborated on the critical role of these 39 vehicles, describing them as “vital arteries” for Mali’s health infrastructure. Their deployment will enable the secure transportation of vaccines and other crucial medical supplies, adhering to strict standards, to the most remote health centers. Furthermore, they will facilitate the deployment of mobile health teams to hard-to-reach communities, thereby bolstering immunization drives, nutritional surveillance, and other essential healthcare services for the benefit of the population.
