Monza secures promotion back to the elite
Monza has officially reclaimed its place in the Italian top flight. Just one year after suffering relegation, the Lombardy-based club confirmed its return to Serie A on Friday following an intense and high-stakes play-off final against Catanzaro.
The path to promotion was far from straightforward for Paolo Bianco’s squad. After securing a solid 2-0 victory in the first leg, Monza faced a significant challenge in the return match. Playing in front of their home supporters, the team struggled to maintain control as Catanzaro fought back with determination. Goals from Fellipe Jack and Ruggero Frosinini saw the visitors claim a 2-0 win on the night, bringing the aggregate score to a 2-2 deadlock.
Regulation rules favor the Brianzoli
Despite the aggregate tie, the match did not proceed to extra time or penalties. According to the competition rules, if the two teams are level after both legs, the promotion is awarded to the side that finished higher during the regular Serie B season. Monza, having finished the campaign in third place, held the advantage over fifth-placed Catanzaro. This technicality proved decisive, allowing the home side to celebrate despite the defeat in the second leg.
This success represents Monza’s second promotion to Serie A in the last four years, following their memorable 2022 victory over Pisa. For a club that had previously aimed for European qualification during its first stint in the elite before dropping down last season, this return marks a vital moment of redemption and a new chapter in their history.
