Morocco reaffirms commitment to UN peacekeeping operations

Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita met with UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix in Rabat, marking the second official visit by the UN envoy to the Kingdom.

Morocco’s ongoing dedication to United Nations peacekeeping efforts took center stage during a high-level meeting in Rabat. The discussions highlighted the Kingdom’s substantial and exemplary contributions to global peacekeeping missions.

This commitment stems from a long-standing royal vision that has guided Morocco’s participation in UN peacekeeping since 1960. Today, the Kingdom ranks among the top nine troop-contributing countries to these operations, underscoring its global leadership in peace and security.

Morocco’s influence extends beyond troop contributions. The Kingdom currently presides over the UN Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for 2026 and serves as coordinator for the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on peacekeeping issues. These roles reflect the international community’s trust in Morocco’s expertise in fostering stability worldwide.

The meeting coincides with sweeping reforms proposed by the UN Secretary-General. These include the UN 80 initiative, aimed at streamlining the UN Secretariat, as well as a broader strategic review of peacekeeping operations and international peace and security architecture. The reforms seek to prioritize political solutions in conflict resolution.
