Planned for Tan-Tan, the African Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center (AMTEC) will serve as a cutting-edge military innovation hub. Its structure is built around three core components: a Multidomain Training Area (MDTA), a Drone Academy (MTDA), and an Innovation and Experimentation Center. This initiative aims to fast-track the modernization of military capabilities by merging advanced technologies and strengthening interoperability between African and Western defense partners.
a three-pillar strategy for military transformation
According to high-ranking officials, Morocco is uniquely positioned to lead this initiative. General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR), emphasized the Kingdom’s readiness: «Morocco’s existing infrastructure and skilled workforce provide the ideal foundation to turn this vision into operational reality swiftly.» He also highlighted the country’s potential as a reliable industrial partner for the United States in defense technology.
The MDTA will offer an advanced training ground where forces can prepare for complex operations, including those spanning the electromagnetic spectrum. The Drone Academy will focus on training African operators in small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS), with a strong emphasis on counterterrorism operations in West Africa. Meanwhile, the Innovation Center will function as a rapid-testing lab for emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and next-generation communications.
bridging defense and economic development
The project extends beyond military applications, opening doors to economic and technological collaboration. It is designed to integrate industrial and academic stakeholders, fostering an innovation ecosystem around defense technologies. AMTEC could become a testing ground for future wireless and detection technologies while supporting development in remote regions.
General Dagvin Anderson, Commander of AFRICOM, described the initiative as «a significant opportunity for U.S. and African defense industries and academic institutions to innovate and develop solutions tailored to emerging challenges.»
a live test at African Lion 2027
The first major milestone for AMTEC will be the African Lion 2027 exercise, serving as a proof of concept for the future center. Held annually in Morocco, this event already acts as a real-world laboratory for integrating advanced technologies into operational environments.
