Niger revolutionizes vaccination campaign payments with digital solutions

During the April 2026 National Polio Vaccination Days in the Niamey region, a groundbreaking digital payment system was implemented for health workers and community actors, supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) in Niger. Over 1,200 participants received their payments via mobile money, replacing the previously used cash-based system.

This innovative approach ensured that 99% of payments were processed within 48 hours post-campaign, directly credited to beneficiaries’ mobile accounts. The system significantly enhanced transaction traceability, reduced payment delays, and minimized logistical challenges associated with cash management. Initial challenges, particularly regarding data quality and digital tool adoption, were addressed through targeted support provided by WHO Niger.

The success of this initiative stems from a robust preparatory phase. Between September 29 and October 3, 2025, WHO Niger organized a capacity-building workshop focused on digital payments for national and local vaccination stakeholders. Led by experts from the WHO Regional Office for Africa, the training assisted the Ministry of Public Health and Hygiene in structuring, designing, and planning the future national digital payment ecosystem.

Why digital payments matter in public health campaigns

The shift to digital payments for health workers serves as a critical enabler for improving efficiency, transparency, and accountability in public health campaigns. By ensuring faster, safer, and fully traceable transactions, this system boosts field agent motivation and enhances the overall performance of health interventions. With its proven success in Niamey, the model is poised for nationwide expansion and integration into other public health programs, underscoring WHO Niger’s commitment to delivering tangible, measurable results on the ground.

Key benefits of the digital payment system

  • Rapid processing: 99% of payments completed within 48 hours
  • Enhanced traceability: Every transaction is fully documented and auditable
  • Cost efficiency: Elimination of cash-handling logistics and risks
  • Improved accountability: Transparent transactions reduce fraud and mismanagement
  • Scalability: Proven model ready for national and regional adoption

The digital payment initiative in Niger exemplifies how technology can transform public health delivery, setting a new standard for health campaign efficiency and reliability.
