Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi appealed for unity and vigilance against divisive forces during a recent gathering with Congolese expatriates in Houston, United States. The meeting followed the Democratic Republic of Congo’s 1-1 draw against Portugal in a World Cup match.
Addressing the diaspora in the Texan city, the Head of State specifically highlighted the ongoing security challenges in the eastern regions of the country. He strongly condemned those he views as adversaries of the nation.
“Their accomplices have lost their minds. Remain united. Do not let them deceive you, do not let them exploit regionalism to manipulate you. Refuse to betray your homeland. There are still those who seek to undermine us. We once believed they were only in Rwanda, but they have infiltrated our ranks,” President Tshisekedi declared.
The Congolese leader also commended the national football team, the Léopards, for their performance, stating they had brought immense pride to the country. “The Léopards have made us proud. I inquired with FIFA about additional tickets for Congolese here should we advance from the group stage. Have no fear. We will provide resources to our ambassador,” he affirmed.
For President Tshisekedi, the national team’s display conveyed a message far beyond the football pitch. “Today, everyone who feared Cristiano Ronaldo witnessed how we played, a nation like ours grappling with conflict. Let us heed our national anthem’s call, and raise our heads high. Demonstrate the dignity of being Congolese,” he urged.
The Head of State indicated his imminent departure from the United States to return to the DRC, where he would attend to other national responsibilities. “I will go back to Congo to handle other matters. I came solely to bring luck for the first match. We are allocating resources to ensure you can follow the team,” he explained.
Reiterating his focus on the situation in the country’s east, President Tshisekedi expressed confidence in a forthcoming improvement within the coming months. “I have faith that, in the days ahead, the entire Congo will be liberated. Our brothers and sisters are celebrating in Goma, in Bukavu; we will be together. The enemies had infiltrated, and today, we have learned our lesson. We must now build something greater,” he stated.
In a speech that seamlessly wove together themes of football, national politics, and identity, Félix Tshisekedi further encouraged Congolese citizens to embrace national pride and contribute to various societal sectors.
“We began with the Léopards, and we will extend this spirit to all other domains: football, basketball, science, academia. Be proud to be Congolese. It is my mission to restore this pride within you,” he asserted.
The Democratic Republic of Congo secured its first-ever World Cup point in Houston on Wednesday, thanks to their draw against Portugal.
