Prime minister sonko unveils strategy for Senegal’s national parks through public-private partnerships

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has issued a clear directive to the ministers overseeing Environment, Tourism, Economy, Planning and Cooperation, as well as Finance and Budget. The mandate is to implement all necessary measures to invigorate the administration of Senegal’s invaluable national natural heritage.

Working closely with COSIVRA, the Executive branch aims to establish a modern and sustainable operational framework for the nation’s premier national parks and significant ecological landmarks. This pivotal strategic direction will harness the power of public-private partnerships (PPPs), seeking to harmoniously blend biodiversity conservation with enhanced economic appeal.

niokolo koba, djoudj, saloum, and technopole at the core of the attractive strategy

This governmental instruction specifically targets several strategic and highly popular tourist ecosystems across Senegalese territory. The sites directly slated for these partnership deployments include the Niokolo-Koba National Park, Hann Park, the Saloum Delta, the Djoudj National Bird Park, alongside the highly sensitive urban reserves of Dakar’s Technopole and Lac Rose.

By entrusting the development and enhancement of these locations to private operators, under rigorous state oversight, the government intends to attract substantial investments, modernize essential visitor infrastructure, and generate new revenue streams. Crucially, these efforts will be undertaken while ensuring stringent protection for all classified areas.
