Regional gender and green economy program launched in Abidjan

Abidjan, 22 May 2026 — The ECOWAS Centre for Gender Development (CCDG) has joined forces with UN Women and multiple ECOWAS agencies to validate a groundbreaking regional programme focused on gender equality, climate resilience, and the green economy. The initiative was officially endorsed during a two-day meeting concluded in Abidjan on Friday.

The gathering, which brought together key stakeholders from 15 to 16 May at the ECOWAS Resident Representation in Côte d’Ivoire, served as the final step in shaping the programme’s strategic framework and establishing a clear implementation roadmap.

a blueprint for inclusive climate action

This programme is designed to enhance regional efforts in addressing the pressing needs of member states regarding gender equity, climate adaptation, and ecological transformation. It also aims to mobilise resources in support of the ECOWAS Gender and Climate Action Plan, reinforcing the bloc’s commitment to sustainable development goals.

Sandra Oulaté Fattoh, Director of the CCDG, highlighted the dual nature of the green transition as both a challenge and an opportunity for women and girls across West Africa. She stressed that empowering female leadership in climate solutions is essential for driving meaningful change in the region.

Adjaratou Fatou Ndiaye, UN Women’s Resident Representative in Côte d’Ivoire, described the initiative as a pivotal shift from policy declarations to tangible action. She emphasised the need to translate commitments into measurable results that benefit communities most affected by climate change.

Dr Kalilou Sylla, ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, underscored the importance of an inclusive green transition. He called for policies that create real economic opportunities for women and young people, ensuring no one is left behind in the region’s sustainable development journey.

next steps for regional adoption

The finalised programme document is expected to be adopted during a working session scheduled in Lomé, Togo, from 29 June to 6 July 2026.
