The handover ceremony at Senegal’s Prime Ministry served as a platform for outgoing Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko to extend both appreciation and caution to his successor, Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô. The transition underscored a commitment to institutional continuity while acknowledging the challenges ahead.

Ceremony highlights shared legacy and expectations

The handover ceremony, held on Friday, brought together outgoing Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and his successor, Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô, who was officially sworn in as head of government. The event was marked by mutual respect and reflections on their collaborative stewardship of state affairs.

During the event, the new Prime Minister shared insights into their professional relationship, which began in April 2024. « He reached out to me. He didn’t know me, but I came. He trusted me, » Al Aminou Lô recounted, describing the start of their partnership in implementing the National Transformation Agenda.

The new head of government also highlighted his subsequent involvement in executive missions, stating, « The authorities decided, and the President called upon me to support the National Transformation Agenda under his leadership. The results have been widely recognized. » He emphasized his role in bridging the Prime Ministry and the Presidency, noting that Sonko had encouraged him to maintain this connection.

Al Aminou Lô also revealed that he maintained regular contact with his predecessor for updates and guidance. « Whenever I needed to report progress or seek advice, he welcomed me with openness, » he shared. Reflecting on the transition’s significance, he described it as both a personal and institutional milestone, saying, « It’s an honor to work alongside someone who has always supported the progress of this nation. »

Sonko’s candid advice on governance challenges

The outgoing Prime Minister did not shy away from addressing the difficulties ahead. « He made it clear just days ago that the road ahead will be particularly tough, » Al Aminou Lô disclosed. Despite the challenges, he expressed his intention to continue leveraging Sonko’s expertise, stating, « I will continue to seek his wise counsel whenever necessary. »

Institutional continuity and future priorities

The handover signaled a smooth transition of leadership, with both figures stressing the importance of collaboration in navigating the National Transformation Agenda. While the new Prime Minister acknowledged the road ahead would test his leadership, he framed the transition as an opportunity to build on shared achievements.
