Ministerial council meeting: Ousmane Sonko criticizes judicial delays

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko expressed strong frustration during a ministerial council meeting on Thursday regarding the sluggish handling of judicial cases tied to financial accountability.

The head of government intervened following a presentation by Justice Minister Yassine Fall, directly challenging the judiciary’s effectiveness in addressing alleged cases of mismanagement and corruption.

Sonko questioned the pace of legal proceedings and the lack of concrete judicial outcomes in critical cases, warning of a growing sense of impunity. He emphasized that significant public funds may have been diverted without visible legal consequences, which he argued undermines public trust in government institutions.

In his address, the Prime Minister called for accountability at all levels, targeting both former and current officials. He also highlighted persistent dysfunctions within the judicial process, suggesting structural obstacles that hinder progress in sensitive cases.

Justice Minister Yassine Fall responded by assuring that her department is actively advancing ongoing investigations. She acknowledged operational constraints but reaffirmed the judiciary’s commitment to pursuing cases where sufficient evidence exists.

Despite her assurances, Sonko maintained pressure, urging faster case resolutions and greater transparency in progress tracking. He stressed that financial accountability remains a cornerstone of the current administration’s agenda.

In closing, Sonko reiterated that judicial matters serve the public interest and must be handled with urgency and rigor to restore citizen confidence in Senegal’s institutions.
