Senegal’s prime minister ousmane sonko faces national assembly on key issues

Ousmane Sonko à l'Assemblée nationale: ce qu'il faut savoir de cette cinquième séance de "Questions d'actualité"
Senegal’s Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, is scheduled to appear before the National Assembly this Friday at 10:00 GMT for a crucial session dedicated to current affairs and government accountability. This pivotal institutional gathering offers a vital platform to scrutinize the government’s performance, delve into significant macroeconomic challenges, and provide clarity on the prevailing political landscape.

This direct engagement unfolds amid a particularly sensitive political atmosphere, largely shaped by the ongoing debates surrounding recent revisions to articles L.29 and L.30 of the Electoral Code. These amendments, which directly impact eligibility criteria and the restoration of civic rights, have sparked considerable public discussion and stand as a central point of contention. Ever since the adoption and promulgation of this law by President Diomaye Faye, opposition factions have consistently accused the parliamentary majority of enacting a “tailor-made law” designed to facilitate Sonko’s eligibility for the 2029 elections, despite his own assertions that he is already “eligible” for all electoral contests in Senegal.

This fifth parliamentary exercise in accountability for the Prime Minister will also concentrate on the daily realities faced by Senegalese citizens. Sonko, accompanied by all members of his government, is expected to address tangible issues such as the rising cost of living. Discussions will include the specific measures the state is implementing to reduce the prices of essential commodities and energy.

Economic and financial matters are also high on the agenda, with anticipated focus on the progress of discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the current status of the national economic recovery plan, and the preparatory work for the upcoming budget.

Regarding key sectoral priorities, topics to be addressed include family security scholarships, the advancement of the agricultural campaign, and the state’s supportive preparations for the upcoming Tabaski celebration.
The dynamic between the Prime Minister and President Diomaye Faye will also form a central part of the deliberations, set against a political backdrop that Sonko himself has characterized as a “gentle cohabitation.”
