Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has once again underscored the government’s resolve to strengthen Senegal’s laws regarding homosexuality. His remarks come amid ongoing discussions about legislative enforcement and the country’s political direction on this contentious topic.

During his address, the head of government highlighted the need for laws to be applied uniformly across all segments of society. He stressed that enforcement would be impartial, stating: « No one will be shielded from these laws—whether influential figures or ordinary citizens. When legislation is enacted, it must be implemented in its entirety, without exception. »

Sonko went on to suggest that the current situation reflects a historic lack of decisive action. He remarked: « This issue is not a recent phenomenon; past administrations failed to address it effectively. If they had acted sooner, we would not be facing this escalation today. »

The Prime Minister also addressed external criticism, particularly from Western nations. He firmly stated: « Senegalese society overwhelmingly supports these laws. The only opposition comes from abroad, especially certain Western capitals. We owe no explanations or lessons to anyone. » He further dismissed calls for a legislative moratorium, adding: « Even some African intellectuals have attempted to intervene, but the process will proceed without delay. »
