Somali FIFA referee Omar Artan denied entry to the United States for World Cup duties

Nairobi (Kenya), 8 juin 2026 – A significant diplomatic and sporting incident has unfolded amidst preparations for the upcoming football World Cup. Omar Artan, the esteemed Somali international referee, officially appointed by FIFA to officiate during the prestigious tournament, has been barred from entering the United States, one of the host nations for the global event.

American customs authorities promptly rejected the official’s request for entry, despite his official accreditation issued by football’s world governing body.

Diplomatic passport proves insufficient

This decision follows what has been a protracted and intricate administrative process for the Somali refereeing corps. Faced with initial difficulties in securing a standard visa, the Somali embassy in Nairobi had intervened, issuing Artan a diplomatic passport to bolster his application. However, this endorsement from the Somali state failed to sway the stance of US immigration services, which maintain exceptionally stringent admission criteria for nationals from the Horn of Africa region.

As of now, neither the Somali football federation nor US consular authorities have provided an official justification for this refusal of entry.

A setback for Africa’s top referee of 2025

This administrative roadblock impacts one of the most prominent figures in continental officiating. Omar Artan is coming off an exceptional season, notably having refereed the return leg of the CAF Champions League final between Pyramids FC and Mamelodi Sundowns. His outstanding performances earned him the title of best African referee of 2025, awarded by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The forced exclusion of a FIFA-accredited official reignites discussions regarding guarantees for the free movement of athletes and officials during major sporting events hosted on American soil, especially as the World Cup is specifically designed to bring nations from across the globe together.
