Sorbonne university explores medical partnership with Benin’s chic hospital

A new chapter in West African medicine and research is taking shape. Sorbonne Université, a leading European academic and medical institution, is now turning its attention to Bénin. A high-level delegation from the French university, led by its president, visited the Centre Hospitalier International de Calavi (CHIC) to see this emerging benchmark of Bénin’s public health system.

This strategically important visit outlines the contours of a promising alliance, aiming to bridge the academic and hospital worlds to boost both care delivery and medical training in the subregion.

World-class technical platform

Inaugurated to redefine healthcare standards and dramatically reduce medical evacuations abroad, CHIC impressed its guests. Spread over 40,000 m² with a capacity of more than 430 beds, the centre integrates state-of-the-art imaging and treatment technologies, especially in medical oncology, radiotherapy, and complex cardiology.

From the discovery of care centres to the medico-technical unit, the European delegation saw firsthand the rigorous infrastructure built to the highest international norms.

“The shared ambition is to strengthen excellence in care, training, and research for the people of Bénin and Africa.”

Tailored training and cutting-edge research

Beyond a courtesy visit, this meeting marks the start of an active exploration phase. The goal is clear: to jointly design specialised training programmes that directly address CHIC’s advanced needs, building on existing collaborations in Bénin.

By combining Sorbonne Université’s academic expertise with CHIC’s technological potential, Bénin is not only acquiring a modern hospital—it is permanently establishing a centre of reference and attractiveness for the medicine of tomorrow on the African continent.
