Togo’s faure gnassingbé intensifies african diplomacy for regional peace and integration

Togo’s President Faure Gnassingbé has been actively engaged in a series of high-level diplomatic discussions across Central and East Africa. These consultations primarily center on enhancing regional collaboration and fostering stability within the Great Lakes area. A key event in this diplomatic push was his presence at the inauguration ceremony of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni in Kampala on May 12, 2026, following Museveni’s re-election.

On the sidelines of the official inauguration, President Gnassingbé and President Museveni held significant talks. Their agenda focused on the pressing security challenges impacting the Great Lakes region, particularly the ongoing crisis in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Togolese and Ugandan administrations are committed to maintaining consistent dialogue to support peace-building initiatives and promote lasting stability throughout this critical African sub-region.

Just prior to his visit to Uganda, President Gnassingbé traveled to Oyo, Congo, for a working meeting with President Denis Sassou N’Guesso. Their discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation between Togo and Congo, alongside exploring various economic issues of mutual interest.

A notable point of their conversation was the progress and implementation of agreements established in August 2020. These accords involve the Autonomous Port of Lomé and the Autonomous Port of Pointe-Noire, both recognized as crucial strategic infrastructures for facilitating commercial exchanges across Central and West Africa.

Beyond the economic agenda, the leaders also addressed broader political and security challenges confronting the African continent. As an African Union mediator in the crisis affecting eastern DRC, President Gnassingbé continues his intensive diplomatic consultations. His ongoing efforts are geared towards finding sustainable solutions and reinforcing the imperative of deeper African integration.
